Music, in life's journey, offers profound substance that is not available in books, words, or even
intense and rigorous thought. Even for the non-musician, the depths of classical music provide insight, knowledge, and
enrichment.
One might think there is so much valuable classical material from previous centuries that in a lifetime one could
easily forgo any concentration on new music. I have found, on the contrary, that exposure to new music broadens and
deepens musical experience. There is palpable excitement, innovation, freshness, and creative brilliance in these new works.
Audiences are clearly beginning to welcome the small portions of new music to which they are exposed. But it is indeed rare
to find musical organizations dedicated to exclusively performing the wide range of excellent new music being composed
but not available to audiences. Composition did not cease with the great masters: it continues in all its diversity,
reflecting the richness of our own culture.
This new music is fun, intensely satisfying, moving, and important. And what is so exciting about Brave New Works
is that the musicians themselves choose what to perform, based on their own intimate knowledge of musical excellence.
Some of it is challenging, as reflected in the name itself, but our lives are richer for it, and the effort is worth our support
and worthy of our appreciation. Without such healthy activity, music of a current age would have virtually no opportunity
to thrive as the masterpieces cherished by future generations. Nor would we have the opportunity to experience the
vigorous flowering of musical talent in our own time.
