Singers are sometimes enigmatic and surrounded by a lot of fame, sometimes so much that people consider them to be prodigies. There are myths surrounding singing and whether or not you can grow your voice. Many consider that you cannot be a good singer unless you were born with it or start as a child.

Many up and coming singers nowadays spend a lot of time on YouTube finding various vocal coaches and their tips and tricks on how to be better at singing. Most of them skip out on the important parts and make clickbait videos on this or that magical trick or variation which will help you grow your voice.
Such a thing doesn’t exist and so some of them spend their time and health trying out incorrect or unhealthy exercises. You shouldn’t try to run before you can properly walk, or crawl, for that matter. Singing has the same principles, so filtering out the tutorials for a complete and methodical vocal coach is really encouraged.
Schools of Music and Vocal Coaches
Whether your child takes up music classes at a dedicated school or finds a vocal coach online or in person, there are things to consider like whether a coach can really show you their students’ improvements in vocal training and whether they themselves can demonstrate what they’re preaching.
Apart from that, the standard procedure of training your voice is pretty much singing through the scales. Starting things off at the lower notes, finish the scale, go up half a step, and so forth until a point is reached where the high notes are no longer clear. At that point, the vowels are modifying so that you can reach an even higher note.
Like adding weights to your bench press and then not being able to lift anymore, singers also tend to overdo it with the high notes, leading to a soreness of the vocal cords. Training the voice means finding your own limit of highs and lows where you are comfortable enough but are still able to challenge your limits and improve. As muscles need time to grow and strengthen, so do vocal cords.
After getting the basics down, singers turn towards vibrato techniques and compression, distortion and other variations which give the voice flavor.
As any other sport or activity is trained methodically, so is the voice. Singers are no exception and even though you can get advantages through genetics, you would still have to train to improve your singing.
